What’s needed to solve your own problems?
“There is a marvelous story of a man who once stood before God, his heart breaking from the pain and injustice in the world.
‘Dear God,’ he cried out, ‘look at all the suffering, the anguish and distress in the world. Why don’t you send help?’
God responded, ‘I did send help. I sent you.’”
– RABBI DAVID J. WOLPE
A standard answer in my company to all employees (even myself) about all complaints, any complaints about any matter from anyone (and there were a lot of them some years ago) is: “You are right about the problem. Glad you are here. How will you go about helping us to fix it?”
I don’t have employees anymore. I have problem-solvers who first work, then go onto leading and managing. Of course, I also have lots of past employees – if you get the drift 🙂
By the way that is also what is happening to my clients, they start solving their own problems, they stop complaining about how the marketing programs do not work, how HMO is destructive, and how they have no time to do the right things. Our clients start solving their own problems, which leads them to being rich and happy!
One cannot really solve problems for others, one can only show them the road to solve their own problems. That, and only that can really help you, and it will help you more than you can ever imagine. Try it!

PS. After more than a decade the above holds truth, but let me add a few things.
Remember that the world and how it operates, the tools it uses has changed and if you do not want to be the next horse and buggy then you better learn the skills needed for today.
The beauty is that it never ever was as easy to earn for a living without being chained to a particular job or a particular location or a particular product, service or skill!
Ok, there are – a few skills which are paramount in today’s economy.
But to be fair those skills have been paramount 100 years ago and 2000 years ago.
It’s the skill of communication to people.
More specific, even though the same, it’s the skill of sales, marketing & public relation!
It’s the skill of negotiating!
Everything in life is a negotiation or if you prefer a sales job, marketing job, public relation job or if you prefer a communication job!
Why 2000 years ago was this already super-important?
Well, we had Jesus Christ then – didn’t we?
He was the first super negotiator, sales and marketing person – after Buddha from 5000 years ago that is!
Look, sales and marketing skills are NOT here to stuff something down the throat to someone who does not want it!
Absolutely NOT! A salesman makes others aware of how his product or service would help the other person! That’s it! No more!
Jesus Christ and Buddha had a great message and they both have been super great communicators – or should I say marketing people?
Godly or not – does not matter – they have been!
Remember your fist date? You got it because of communication/sales/marketing/public relation – in short, because you negotiated well!
Here is the thing – take away communication, sales, marketing and negotiation and the world stops!
How often have you seen a great chef, car mechanic, even dentist or doctor being at the brink of going broke?
Luck of the above communication, which is marketing skill!
How do you think Jeff Bezos became the richest man in the world in only 20 years with originally borrowed money? He helps millions of businesses sell more! It’s really that simple!
The industrial economy where a well-educated person like a doctor, engineer, lawyer, etc., would stand out and make “good” money is gone or will be gone soon.
Just look at the trend – it’s irreversible!
Never mind that even in the days where a highly-educated person like a doctor would get much more money for his time he STILL WAS changed to his job. He still was trading time for money, but at least it used to be “OK” money.
But today this “getting paid relatively well for your time” does not really exists anymore.
Or does it?
To speak about how the digital economy changes the nature of sales and marketing and has made it much, much more palatable (as it is despised by most professionals) is beyond the scope of this writing which is already a bit of a rand.
But, there isn’t a company in the world which does not need/want more sales – and they are paying very well for this skill, which the digital economy is “made for”!
But do find out about how this change from industrial economy to the digital economy is eroding your future too if you do not cut relatively soon!
And by the way, I am NOT a techie. I need to give my iPhone to my “techy” every few years when I upgrade, as I do not know or even want to know how to do those steps.
The point of this whole writing is that in the big picture, doing just a computer work in the digital age is again, just as being a doctor at a “trading-time-for-money” job and is NOT what you want to aspire!
PPS. In today’s digital economy, literally everyone can create a business which easily runs on the back of other technologies.
